Foreign Exchange

Foreign Exchange is a one-day course that will develop and enhance your skills by providing insight into foreign exchange markets, their operation and impact on everyday business and procurement.

The course combines class discussions with practical exercises, where you will have the opportunity to apply techniques in a real-life context. The material is presented in a cohesive manner tailored to the public sector.

Through simulated scenarios, participants will learn to identify potential opportunities for savings from FX in procurement. Participants will also complete short quizzes designed to test understanding of practices that lower overall costs for overseas payments.

  • Understand different foreign exchange market transactions and instruments.
  • Effectively manage foreign exchange exposures
  • Hedge FX risk when procuring goods secured from overseas
  • Understand FX risk in a whole-of-state context

  • Financial market transactions and instruments, including foreign exchange spot transactions (near term settlement) and forwards (forward date settlement)
  • Key drivers of foreign exchange rates
  • Foreign exchange rate volatility
  • Managing foreign exchange exposures
  • Quoting foreign exchange rates (bid/offer)
  • Risk appetite considerations when hedging
  • FX in procurement
  • Foreign exchange from a whole of state perspective

Who is this course suited to?

This course is designed for professionals and managers responsible for managing financial risk including procurement. The course is aimed at participants new to those roles or those who wish to refresh and extend their knowledge of FX markets and the impact on the public sector’s everyday business.

Please note: to be eligible for a digital badge participants must attend all sessions and complete all associated learning content/activities.
